Trying to copy a terrain to another project

Hello. I tried following the instructions below, but it didn't work. It wasn't the terrain in the previous project, just a smooth curve with mountains stamped here and there. Is there another way to copy the terrain with all its detail?

Have you used the terrain scanner? 
You could just scan the terrain and turn that into a .exr file and import that into a new project and just stamp that.
