New tree prefab renders duplicates in purple

I wanted to add palm trees to my biome. So I have these HDRP trees. When I add them as a spawner to the Biome, the trees get placed correctly and look fine, but in my camera view (VR and in Editor) I see additional copies of the trees in wrong materials in the background (depending in my camera position). This does not happen with the build-in trees like an oak.
I'm using the PW shaders for the trunk and leaves like the build-in oaks have. I can't seem to think of why this happens....

If these are all the same tree:

then this looks like an LOD problem. 
You may need to apply it to the other lods as well.
