Textures not displaying correctly

Hello, I’ve generated a multi terrain set up with Gaia pro, applied textures and added gts and it works/renders correctly. However when I replicate this process on a much larger multi terrain map (70 x 70 256), when I add gts, the textures don’t display, it just shows a dark blurry covering. I’ve tried adding a new profile, regenerating etc, but it doesn’t change. Exact same process as with the smaller multi terrain map. I feel I must be missing something.

Has anyone come across this before?

Can you please tell me what Unity version you are using? 
Also please check the materials for the darker ones and send me a screenshot.

Hi, I’m using unity 2021.3.16f1

i’ve been trying to get this to work for around 10 days now without any success. 
some basic info: as mentioned, I’ve had no issue with applying to a single terrain or smaller group of multi terrains all loaded. I’m using the same biome and approach, it simply doesn’t work on a scale of what I’ve applied it to. I have 64gb of ram in my system.

I create a multi terrain setup using the latest version of gaia pro. Consisting 70 x 70 terrains, (256 in size) for a total of 4,900 terrains to be streamed using gaia. I consistently apply a texture biome of 8 textures to the terrains which works fine.


I’ve tried 2 different approaches for applying gts, both with different failures:

1. Apply gts to all the terrains with only the ones visible currently loaded: this applies to all terrains as required but renders them as a black shiny mess. Resetting or applying a new profile does not changes this.

2. I apply it with all terrains loaded (still under my ram limit), with a new profile,  this adds to terrain, then asks to generate the atlas, it creates the atlas and starts a very lengthy serialization process which crashes between 8 - 16 hours after starting. This is destructive, ruins objects in then scene and removes some terrains. What remains was’t saved during the process and thus still doesn’t apply even to the terrains that didn’t get removed.

to reiterate, this doesn’t happen when applied to a single or small group of multi terrains.

Based on the consistent results I’m getting this end, unless I’ve got something obviously wrong from what I’ve detailed, can you please try to recreate the problem so we can figure this out? Generate a map consisting of 70 x 70 256 terrains, add 8 textures and then add gts.

For the black shiny issue, can you check if any of the generated terrain materials have created textures in their respective folder?

Hey, I checked the textures and everything seemed correct both in the test scenario with fewer terrains that worked and the failed scene, everything was identical. Unfortunately the last attempt completely ruined the scene so I had to revert to a back up and an unable to go back to have double check.

Hey Bryan, thanks for the response. I’ve tried multiple times and am unable to get this to work. If someone could confirm that this works on your systems that would be appreciate. As mentioned already, this works on a small scale, not on a a larger scale.

In the 40 hours of dev time I lost trying to get this to work as advertised, I did not come across what Isaac mentioned.

it’s possible this is a problem with my project but as it works completely fine on a smaller scale, I’m requesting that you guys try it on the scale I have to confirm it works please.

Hi there. I spoke to the guys about this.

GTS was not designed to operate at the scale you are working at, and the time it would take to investigate and find a solution for you is not commercially viable based on asset store pricing.

We do have a solution designed to work at earth scale, but this is a separate product called Storm, and its pricing is vastly different from GTS. If you are interested, you can learn more about it and purchase it directly from us.

Hello Adam,

Thank you for the honest response. I figured this was not going work. The only thing I would recommended is being clear on the limitations on your products, I’ve found multiple things that don’t work on this scale and it may save people spending hundreds of pounds on Gaia and gts if they’re aware of the limits involved. Designing multi terrain streaming worlds has a lot of challenges and some of your products offer solutions, but only partially work when going for a huge world.
